FORT CAMPBELL, KY (WSMV) -
An announcement by the U.S. Army has the potential to affect a lot of families here at home.
The Army intends to slash the number of combat brigades and cut the service by about 80,000 soldiers.
Congress has told the Department of Defense to trim nearly $500 billion from the budget within the next 10 years, so the Army announced Wednesday it will restructure its combat brigades and eliminate as many as 13.
Those cuts won't happen right away though. The brigades will be phased out by 2022, and military leaders say the move won't hurt the effectiveness of the armed forces.
A Fort Campbell spokesman tells Channel 4 they do not know yet how this plan may affect the post.
They should have a better idea next month when they get their budget.
