Parade

The annual King Day March began at 11 a.m.

Participants met at Jefferson Street Missionary Baptist Church and begin the route to the Gentry Center on the campus of Tennessee State University.

The march culminated with the King Day Convocation at Tennessee State University.

Town hall meeting

After the march and convocation, community leaders are holding a MLK Day town hall meeting at 2 p.m. at the Legacy Restaurant on Jefferson Street.

The town hall is part of Nash-Vitality week. Topics include getting healthy for the New Year, public education and economic and community development.

Public service

More than 800 area volunteers participated Hands On Nashville's largest-ever Martin Luther King Jr. Day service project, a three-day event coordinated in partnership with the Mayor's Impact Nashville initiative and the Nashville Fire Department.

"I am not at all surprised by the great number of Nashville area volunteers who answered Dr. King's call to action to come together to serve others," Dean said in a news release. "We are a city that gives and keeps on giving. Our city is grateful for the commitment that Hands On Nashville, Nashville firefighters and others brought to this important weekend of service to mark Dr. King's historic legacy."

"It's an honor to join Mayor Dean, local firefighters, and volunteers to honor the legacy of a great American whose pursuit of a bold vision forever changed America," U.S. Sen. Bob Corker said. "I applaud those participating in Day of Service events across Tennessee and hope Dr. King's legacy will continue to inspire Americans to dedicate themselves to their own bold visions and to serving one another so we can improve our communities and leave behind a better country as he did."

The Maury County branch of the NAACP is holding its annual walk for freedom, which begins at 9 a.m. at the courthouse.

In Marshall County, residents are holding the first-ever MLK March in Lewisburg beginning at 1 p.m.  Marchers will go from Lewisburg Lanes to the county courthouse.
