NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The union representing Metro schools' service employees has filed a complaint against schools director Jesse Register.

The Service Employees International Union Local 205 filed its complaint Friday with the school board.

It accuses Register of trying to rescind a labor policy adopted over a decade ago.

The union also says Metro schools are trying to apply a law affecting bargaining rights with teachers to service employees.

"This is not a dispute over wages, funding, or benefits," said Doug Collier, President of SEIU Local 205. "Last year, the state legislature passed laws which affected teachers' right to bargain collectively. Dr. Register is now trying to use those laws – which do not apply to school support employees - as an excuse to overreach his authority and silence the voices of thousands of loyal city employees who voted to form a union."

The union says the law does not apply to service employees.
