ERIN, TN (WSMV) -

A man in Houston County is in jail, accused of stealing from his own mother then setting her house on fire.

Police said Robert Skelton confessed to stealing jewelry and eight guns from his mother's home late last month, then setting fire to the house.

Skelton's mother and her husband were in Mississippi at the time, visiting a sick grandchild.

"For her, it's kind of a double whammy," said Houston County Sheriff's Department Lt. Brian Hooper. "Not only has she lost her home and all the belongings, but her son is in jail, charged with that crime, so she's going through a tough time."

Police have recovered four of the guns and a wedding ring.

Authorities said Skelton has a long criminal record.
