A family is grieving a 19-year-old and struggling with the way police say he died. Cody Clevenger was shot and killed Monday at his apartment in Murfreesboro.
Police say the shooting was drug-related, but Clevenger's family says that is not the person they knew.
Clevenger's family believes the young man was at the wrong place and the wrong time when police say he was killed and another person wounded in the shooting at the Raiders Ridge apartment complex just before 7 p.m.
"I think someone may have set him up," mother Christina Brandenburg said.
Police believe the incident may have involved drugs, but Clevenger's family says that's not the man they knew.
"He's a loving boy. He was the type of boy if you didn't have a shirt, he'll go in his closet and hand it to you. He'll hand you the shoes off his feet and walk barefooted," Brandenburg said.
"He was trying to wash his sins away, but his heart was so troubled," grandmother Betty Clevenger said.
The family found several handwritten letters from Cody as if he knew something bad was going to happen to him.
"When God called him it would be his time, and for us not to cry for him. The letters he wrote were heart-wrenching; it was like he knew what was going to happen," Betty Clevenger said.
Murfreesboro Police are hoping to put all the pieces to this puzzle together soon. They also are hoping to make an arrest.
Officers are searching for two suspects in the shooting. One is a black male, around 5'6" and wearing a red hoodie. The other suspect is a white male, around 5'6" and wearing black hoodie.
Police have not released the identity of the other man who was injured.
