NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Animal advocacy volunteers say they had to dodge bullets in east Nashville this weekend while trying to aid a pit bull that was severely neglected.
Rebecca Helwig with national non-profit group Dogs Deserve Better and Jenna Krabacher with another dog advocacy group came to a home after they received tips from neighbors that a pit bull named Max was in poor condition.
"They tried to come out and help the dog last night. The owners came home and were not very happy to see the volunteers in the backyard trying to feed and check up on the dog. They ran the volunteers off, and they got shot at," Krabacher said.
But that did not keep Helwig and Krabacher from later helping Max after they received tips from neighbors about what happened.
"The owners lost their jobs, couldn't take care of him and didn't know what to do. We were able to get Max after the owner signed him over to Music City Pet Brigade," Krabacher said.
Now, Max will have a good meal and a warm place to sleep.
"This is a new day for Max, and he has his whole future ahead of him. He will never have to look back on this life again. All he's going to know from this day forward is love," Helwig said.
Max has been taken to a vet and will be adopted.
It's unclear if the dog's former owners with face any charges.
