NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

On Sunday, Nissan announced that it is teaming up with Daimler to make Mercedes-Benz engines at its powertrain assembly plant in Decherd.

According to a news release, production will begin in 2014.

Mercedes-Benz engines have never been made in the North America Free Trade region before.

"This is the newest milestone in our pragmatic collaboration and our most significant project outside of Europe so far," said Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn.

The four-cylinder gasoline engines will power the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, built at Daimler's plant in Tuscaloosa, AL.

In 2011, Nissan's plant in Decherd produced more than 580,000 engines.
