City of Portland's bank account hacked

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, TN (WSMV) -

The City of Portland's bank account is the latest Middle Tennessee victim of the Better Business Bureau email scam.

According to Mayor Ken Wilber, a city employee opened an email from the BBB on Dec. 20 but got a costly virus instead.

More than $174,000 was taken from the Portland bank account. The mayor said the city got about 40 percent back so far, but now the FBI has taken over the investigation.

The FBI also told the mayor that the email has a "very sophisticated code."

Portland isn't the only one that's being attacked by hackers. Hundreds of people and business owners in Middle Tennessee have contacted the BBB about the matter. They tell folks not to open any emails that may look suspicious.
