Food giveaways help families stock up for holiday

Posted: Updated:

Many folks are taking the time off from holiday shopping to give back during the season.

The Nashville Family Church, Onegenaway, Feed America First and Feed the Children all handed out food today.

One pastor said it's a great opportunity for families in need to stock up on some extra food.

"The economy's tough. People are out of jobs, out of food and need work," said Chris Whitney, pastor at Onegenaway. "One in five kids is insufficient in Middle Tennessee. We have to get out there and do something."

If you're still looking for a way to give back during the holidays, you can join about 800 people under the Jefferson Street bridge tonight for the Bridge Ministry's Big Christmas Giveaway at 5:30 p.m. People come from all over Middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky to hand out hot meals and clothes to the homeless.
