School board places Drexel Academy on probation

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

After two hours of heated debate, the Metro school board voted 5-3 to place Drexel Preparatory Academy on probation for the remainder of the school year.

The vote, broke by board chairwoman Gracie Porter, also requires the school to provide the board monthly reports on its status and how it's meeting the guidelines of its contract with the Metro school system.

The vote brought cheers of support, hugs and tears from the standing-room-only crowd that filled the Metro school boardroom on Monday evening.

A Channel 4 I-Team investigation uncovered serious violations at the school including the academy hiring unlicensed teachers and they may have failed to do background checks on bus drivers. The school has denied those claims.

Channel 4 News found on the school's website Sunday, a message reading "Drexel Preparatory Academy is OK. We have no plans to close." The message goes on to read, "if you want to attend Drexel register in January."

The school's executive director, Dr. May Alice Ridley, said the website and that message have been up for a while. Ridley also said all performance issues that Metro Schools have had a problem with have been addressed, "all those things have been cleared up and taken care of," said Ridley.
