Posted: Updated:

A grandmother and her 9-year-old grandson were killed when their car collided with a train in Chapel Hill on Saturday morning, according to the sheriff's office.

Authorities say Wanda Shirley and Michael Polk were killed in the collision. Officials say the pair was heading out for Christmas shopping when they stopped to check the mail. Their mailbox is near the railroad tracks, police said.

Deputies said it happened around 9 a.m. on Thick Road, across the street from the Holt Corner Quick Stop.

Shirley attempted to cross the tracks on a private road and was struck by the train, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Two people in the vehicle were killed, according to THP officials.

Visitation will be held Thursday at the Lawrence Funeral Home in Chapel Hill.  A memorial service will be held Friday at the funeral home's chapel.
