The Southern Baptist Convention's publishing division is recalling pink Bibles, saying some of the money raised through their sale was being given to Planned Parenthood.
LifeWay Christian Resources no longer markets the pink-bound version of the Holman Christian Standard Bible and is recalling copies it sold, according to The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/u90K40).
A portion of the purchase price went to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
The Komen foundation issued a statement in which it said all proceeds from the Bible sales were going to breast cancer screenings and expressed disappointment in LifeWay's decision.
LifeWay's move came after complaints that some local Komen affiliates were helping fund cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood, which also provides abortions.
"We made a mistake," said Lifeway Christian Resources President and CEO Thom S. Ranier in a statement posted on the company's website.
Ranier said B&H Publishing Group released to several mass market retailers a Cancer Awareness Bible as a way to place God's Word into the hands of those suffering through breast cancer. As part of the project, B&H agreed to donate $1 from the sale of each Bible to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for breast health education, screening and treatment programs.
"As this project has developed, we realized it was a mistake," said Ranier. "When our leadership discovered the overwhelming concern that some of Komen's affiliates were giving funds to Planned Parenthood, we began the arduous process of withdrawing this Bible from the market.
"Though we have assurances that Komen's funds are used only for breast cancer screening and awareness, it is not keeping with LifeWay's core values to have even an indirect relationship with Planned Parenthood."
The pink Bibles had been in stores since October.
