PORTLAND, TN (WSMV) -

Sumner County Sheriff's deputies said a mother and son were killed when their car crashed into a tree in Portland Saturday night.

According to investigators, the victims were identified as Jane Cole, 61, and Kerry Cole, 33.

Police said the son was driving north at a high rate of speed on Ranch Road around 8 p.m. when he lost control.

A witness told police she saw the speeding car and had to get onto the shoulder of the roadway to avoid a collision.

Deputies said due to the damage on Cole's car, it appears excessive speed may have been a factor.

Deputies also said they found an empty alcoholic beverage container near the scene.

Blood tests are underway to determine whether alcohol could have been a factor.
