College Grove development appears back on track

Posted: Updated:

A multi-million dollar project that went bankrupt and left 1,000 acres sitting idle for three years is now moving again.

An 18-hole golf course with pro-golfer Greg Norman's name attached to it started being developed a few years back. The developer went bankrupt and let the course and all their plans go.

But recently, a new business has bought the property, and work has started again. And this could mean big business and jobs for this rural community.

"Our first reaction was, 'Let's get it cleaned up,'" Terra Verde Developer Mark Enderle said.

In a few years, what used to be 1,000 acres of farmland along Arno Road in College Grove will be transformed into a luxury lifestyle community.

"There will be a spa and a golf course for mom and dad. There will be a kids program, swimming pools," Enderle said.

The Terra Verde Group has taken over and hopes to have the 18-hole golf course complete and open next summer.

Businesses right across from the development are so excited about seeing progress because they know in the future, this will mean more business and jobs for the area.

"The golf staff, the maintenance staff will probably have 25 guys on it. The clubhouse, when we get it all full and up and running, there will be another 25 or 30 people working there," Enderle said.

And there will be dozens hired to help build the 800 future home sites.

Right now, a sales office, a coffee shop and a swim and fitness center exists in the area.

"We are building roads, engaging with builders to see if we can get some of those guys interested," Enderle said.

Once known as Laurel Cove, the development will now be called "The Grove." But big name golfer Greg Norman's name and presence will still be there.

"We've got four or five holes on the back ready for grass next spring, so we've made a good bit of progress in the last 60 days," Enderle said.

And Greg Norman is expected to visit again in the spring. Developers say over the next 10 years, they plan to invest $25 million into the Grove.

They are planning to build 800 homes, ranging anywhere from $500,000 to $1 million.
