Georgia suspends 3 running backs, loses Samuel to injury

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Isaiah Crowell and two other Georgia running backs have been suspended for Saturday's game against New Mexico State for unspecified violations of team rules.

The suspensions of Crowell, the starter, Ken Malcome and Carlton Thomas were announced after Richt's weekly news conference on Tuesday.

"We have certain standards in all that we do and their actions do not reflect the Georgia way," Richt said in a statement. "They will serve their suspensions, learn a lesson and I¹m sure be better men for it." reported the trio failed a drug test administered last week. However, the website reported it was not clear when the results were known.

UGA athletic director Greg McGarity told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday the suspensions were not delayed discipline from before last week's win over rival Florida.

Another tailback, Richard Samuel, who scored the decisive touchdown for Georgia in last week's win over Florida, is expected to miss at least four weeks after surgery on his left ankle on Tuesday.

The suspensions, coupled with Samuel's injury, almost completely wipe out the depth chart for No. 18 Georgia for this week. Third-year sophomore Brandon Harton, who has 11 carries for 33 yards, could start. Harton is a former walk-on who received a scholarship before the season.
