NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Metro Police said Saturday they arrested an ex-convict and registered sex offender in two separate extremely violent cases, including the slashing of a young woman near the Woodland Street Bridge.

According to a news release, Lane Walter Edwards, 47, was booked Saturday morning on one count of criminal homicide, one count of attempted criminal homicide and one count of aggravated rape.

Police said they are investigating to see whether Edwards may be linked to other criminal cases.

According to police, Edwards, who is homeless, is charged with the Sept. 21 beating of Robert Johnson, 46, at a homeless camp under the Jefferson Street Bridge. Johnson died of severe head injuries at Vanderbilt Medical Center four days later.

Edwards is also charged with slashing and sexually assaulting a 23-year-old Mt. Juliet woman Monday night as she walked from downtown to the East Nashville home where she was house-sitting, police said.

Tips from the community and a homeless citizen helped lead investigators to focus on Edwards, police said.

During interviews with detectives, police said Edwards reportedly confessed to both crimes.

According to officers, Edwards' criminal history goes back to 1984, and includes convictions for attempted aggravated rape, reckless endangerment, auto theft and evading arrest.

Police said they are not releasing Edwards' photograph so as to not jeopardize pending lineups.
