ARNOLD AIR FORCE BASE, Tenn. (AP) -

Arnold Engineering Development Center in Tennessee is upgrading the B-52H Stratofortress, including a capability to drop smart bombs from the plane's internal weapons bay.

According to a news release from Arnold, the Air Force is upgrading the B-52's bay to expand its payload by roughly two-thirds.

Since January, the center's Model Shop has been fabricating and assembling the components of the approximately 3,400-pound aluminum and steel B-52H model, at 10 percent scale. This is to allow testing at the center's 16-foot propulsion wind tunnel.

Arnold officials said the size of the work was the biggest in more than 40 years of projects at the facility.
