Man dead, officer injured after Columbia police shooting

COLUMBIA, TN (WSMV) -

A Columbia police officer was placed on administrative leave Tuesday night after a fatal shooting.

According to a news release, Darren Cole, 44, confronted officers at a home on Jefferson Drive.

At the time, the officers were responding to a call about a person threatening to commit suicide.

The release states that Cole struck Officer Sarah Howell with a large stick, and was shot by Officer Jeremy Humphrey when he raised the stick again.

Cole was transported to Maury Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.  Howell was also taken to Maury Regional with minor injuries.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has launched an investigation into the shooting.

Humphrey was placed on routine administrative leave.
