A convicted arsonist has been arrested and charged with arson in an early-morning residential fire that occurred Sept. 28 on Indiana Avenue.

On Thursday, investigators obtained a warrant and arrested David E. McWhirter, 50, charging him with two counts of arson in fires at two separate locations. His bond has been set at $100,000.

Following an investigation into the fire at 5200 Indiana Ave., investigators learned that another fire began at a Mapco station on 51st Avenue near the gas pumps.

The vacant house was destroyed, but there was minimal damage at the gas station.

McWhirter has a lengthy criminal history and has been charged and convicted of arson charges in the past.

Investigators are still searching for information about two additional arson fires that occurred last week on Smith Springs Road involving a barn and a church bus two miles away.

Anyone with information about the intentional fires is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 74-Crime or the Arson Hotline at 1-800-762-3017.
