Feds: Gibson wood seizure linked to criminal probe

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -

Federal prosecutors are confirming there's a criminal investigation under way related to the Gibson Guitar raid and are asking a judge to delay efforts by the company to reclaim wood that was seized.

Agents last month raided Gibson factories and offices in Nashville and Memphis after seizing what they deem illegal Indian ebony wood shipped to the guitar maker.

The specifics of the criminal investigation have been filed under seal. U.S. Attorney Jerry Martin on Wednesday declined to give more details to The Associated Press, citing department policy regarding ongoing investigations.

Gibson CEO Henry Juszkiewicz and his largely Republican and tea party supporters have decried the raids as examples of overzealous regulation under the federal Lacey Act, which bans the import of illegally harvested wildlife and plants.
