Apple announces new iPhone

Posted: Updated:

CUPERTINO, CA (RNN) - Apple unveiled the iPhone 4S as the successor to the highly-successful iPhone 4 Tuesday at Apple's Cupertino, CA, campus.

The newest phone to join Apple's smartphone family looks similar to the iPhone 4 on the outside, but according to Phillip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, "the inside is all new."

Hardware upgrades to the iPhone 4S boost speeds, graphics, battery life and correct the plagued iPhone 4 antenna.

With the new A5 dual-core processor, the iPhone 4S is twice as fast as its predecessor.

But Schiller said gaming will see the real boost from the hardware upgrades with seven times faster graphics for the 4S.

The iPhone 4S now contains a faster, higher-quality camera. The 8 megapixel back-facing camera utilizes a backlit sensor, allowing better photos in low-light situations.

With eight hours of talk time over 3G, Apple's new smartphone has the best battery life of any iPhone before.

The iPhone 4S has a new antenna system that switches between two antennas to transmit and receive data.

According to Shiller, the iPhone 4S' dual antenna system will result in better call quality and faster downloads.

Apple fans expecting the iPhone 5 vented their disappointment with Tuesday's announcement on live blogs across the web.

Former Apple CEO Steve Job's presence was also missing from Tuesday's event.

For the first time since taking the reigns from Jobs in August, Apple CEO Tim Cook hosted Tuesday's event at the Town Hall on Apple's Cupertino, CA, campus.

"I love Apple," Cook said as he got his footing at Tuesday's event. "And I consider it the privilege of a lifetime to have worked here almost 14 years to work in this new role."

Just like the Mac this summer, Apple's mobile devices are getting a facelift with iOS 5.

The latest incarnation of the mobile operating system utilizes the free services of the new iCloud to free the iPhone, iPad and iPhone Touch from their enslavement to the PC.

With update users will gain access to more than 200 new features including the Notification Center, Newsstand, iMessage, enhancements to the Camera and Photo apps, and Twitter integration.

iOS5 will be available as a free download on Oct. 12 for the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, iPad 2, and third and fourth generation iPod touch.
