DICKSON, TN (WSMV) -

An off-duty Dickson County deputy was involved in a fatal car crash after he fell asleep at the wheel Thursday morning, according to local police.

The crash occurred just before 8 a.m. on Beasley Drive near Highway 48 South when Deputy Joseph Wenck crossed the center line and struck two vehicles, killing 23-year-old Nathan Beard.

Wenck was driving his personal vehicle at the time of the wreck, according to the Dickson County Sheriff's Office. He was taken to Horizon Medical Center in Dickson after the crash but is expected to be OK.

Wenck's baby was in the back seat of his car at the time of the crash, but the child was not hurt.

The driver of the second vehicle struck by Wenck's vehicle was not injured.

Wenck has been a deputy with the Dickson Sheriff's Department since September 2007.
