WASHINGTON, DC (WSMV) -

The Department of Health and Human Services has launched a major initiative to prevent a million heart attacks and strokes.

The effort will focus on getting Americans to quit smoking, control blood pressure and cholesterol levels and eat healthier.

The HHS and other major private and public groups are collaborating to prevent one million heart attacks over a five-year period.

The groups will also encourage Aspirin use for people at risk of heart attacks.

Walgreens has joined the effort and will offer free blood pressure screenings and consultations with a pharmacist or nurse practitioner.
