Lawrenceburg family shares 9/11 story

Posted: Updated:

The Shelton family took a trip there after their oldest daughter was invited to compete in the Strongest Kid in America contest that day.

"We were just as a family so excited because we had never been to New York City before. Of course, things changed on Sept. 11," said Cathryn Shelton.

The family was only supposed to stay for a few days, but they were interrupted by a tragic event.

"No one knew what to do or what was going to happen next," said Doug Shelton. "We were actually in the contest when they came in and announced."

The Shelton's say their lives changed forever that day.

"We took walks outside the hotel at night after the attacks," said Cathryn Shelton. "We remember it just being deathly quiet in New York City, which is something no one ever hears."

A decade later, this was the first time the family shared intimate moments and pictures taken just days before the Twin Towers were destroyed.

The family eventually made it back to Tennessee safely.
