$4M community center opening in Sylvan Park

Nashville is about to open the doors to its newest community center Saturday.

The McCabe Community Center sits in the middle of Sylvan Park and there's hope it'll attract visitors from across the city.

"It's wonderful. I went through the whole thing, and as I get older, I'm 77, I will enjoy using the inside," said resident Nell Salley.

Metro spent $4 million on the building and it shows. From the equipment to the gym floor to the finishing touches, the center fits right in with the Sylvan Park neighborhood. Some amenities also include a fitness center, indoor walking track and game room.

It will be the first community center in Nashville that's taking advantage of eco-friendly technology.

"I think it's really going to bring our neighborhood and other neighborhoods together for a lot of community events," said Metro councilman Jason Holleman.

"This piece of property has become so valuable and so loved by the community, and this is just going to be another addition to it," said Metro interim parks director Tommy Lynch.

"We're glad that in the 21st century there's a new use that reflects that history but also tells us about the future," said Holleman.

The center hopefully will attract visitors from the Richland Creek Greenway and the nearby McCabe Golf course. It already has the eye of Salley.

"We needed this. The people here, they will enjoy it, and people from over the area will come. The golfers, they will see it and use it, and then the children's ball fields behind, so it's just so well equipped. I'm just very pleased with it," said Salley.

Metro's first piece of public art not located in downtown will be at the McCabe Community Center. The theme will be aviation since the area housed Nashville's first municipal airport.

Visitors to the center must pay $3 to use the gym facilities.

The center is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The opening happens the same day as the Richland Farmers Market and the annual home tour in Sylvan Park.

Metro government said they will next overhaul the Sevier Community Center in the 12th South neighborhood of Nashville.
