Police: Memphis officer gave false information about shooting

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -

Memphis Police say one of their officers lied to them about who shot him.

Sgt. Norman Benjamin told investigators he was shot early Saturday afternoon by a Hispanic man and gave a physical and clothing description of the supposed suspect.

In a news release on Monday, the department said Benjamin's story unraveled as the investigation proceeded, and it was learned that he had been shot during a domestic argument by a woman he was romantically involved with.

The officer was seriously wounded and underwent surgery at the Regional Medical Center, where he was still under intensive care on Monday. His condition had been upgraded to stable.

Police charged 54-year-old Martha Mote with attempted second-degree murder.

The prosecutor's office will consider possible false report charges for Benjamin.
