MNPS board approves balanced school calendar

Posted: Updated:

Members of the Metro Nashville Public schools board unanimously approved a balanced calendar proposal Tuesday, effective with the 2012-2013 school year.

The approved calendar has classes beginning Aug. 1, 2012 and ending May 24, 2013. There will be 176 instructional days during the school year, with inter-sessions and breaks spaced throughout the year.

Unlike a different balanced calendar proposal that failed, the approved calendar does not cost the district extra money.

Board members discussed their feelings about the switch to the balanced calendar before the vote, and Superintendent Dr. Jesse Register said, "a change like this is a change in culture."

Monday, the district released results of a telephone survey conducted last week to gauge the feelings of parents, faculty and staff on the calendar changes.

With 21,091 responses, which is a 37 percent participation rate, 53 percent of those surveyed responded in favor of the balanced calendar and 47 preferred the traditional calendar.
