Nashville auto detailer works on Air Force One project

Posted: Updated:

A local business owner had a chance run-in with Air Force One.

Terrance Dunnavant's work on cars was so good, he got the call to work on a huge piece of presidential history. And he walked away with a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The Nashville man owns Clean Cars of America, and about a decade's worth of work and national certification earned him a huge honor - a spot on the Air Force One detail team.

Dunnavant recently returned from a trip to Seattle, where he had the chance to clean up the very first plane to carry the Air Force One designation, which carried presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon.

"It's like the Super Bowl of auto detailing. I mean, flying out there, it felt like I was on my way to compete in the Olympics," he said. "I mean it was really one of those experiences where it changes you for the better."

In all, about 40 detailers from across the country worked on the project in Seattle. In addition to the first Air Force One, the volunteers also worked on a historic B-29 bomber.

Now, it's back to Nashville for Dunnavant. And it's back to work, with clients waiting.

"I really feel like I had moved up to the next level," he said.

Only now, there's a renewed push to encourage others to make the most of a day job by dreaming big.

"There's an old saying, if it doesn't kill you, it will only make you stronger. And you know, being an entrepreneur and following your dream will definitely, you know, if you persevere, will give you that sense of fulfillment in your heart," Dunnavant said.

There could be more big-scale projects in the works for the auto detailer. The details aren't clear now, but he is just enjoying the ride.
