Son's testimony reveals details of 2009 Clarksville murder

CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

For the first time, we are hearing straight from a son who conspired with his sister to kill their father.

Gilbert Hart was killed two years ago in Clarksville. Police say the alleged gunman was hired by his own children, Alex and Becca, then 17 and 18 years old, respectively.

Alex Hart recently pled guilty for his role in his father's murder, and his sister is awaiting trial along with the friend they hired to kill their dad.

And after initially telling police she thought their house had been robbed and her husband shot, Hart's widow, Rebecca Francis Hart, was recently indicted for murder also.

Gilbert Hart was a businessman, a civilian member, a mason and loved having fun on his motorcycle.

But what happened at home, inside the privacy of the family's Clarksville house, only the family will ever know.

Now, new details are emerging about another side of the man that only his family saw. Channel 4 obtained audio recordings from Alex Hart's trial.

"My dad Gib Hart was an alcoholic, abusive, cruel man who did terrible things to me, to my mom and sister. Mom told us to pray that God would handle it," Alex Hart's testimony states.

Through an attorney, Alex Hart's disturbing testimony was read aloud in court.

"Dad handcuffed me to the foot of his bed and did other things to me, including pointing a gun to me and making me beg for my life. He did other things to Becca and mom."

Alex said over time, the abuse kept getting worse and worse.

"I was told that if something didn't happen to Dad soon, Dad would kill mom."

So just after midnight on June 3, 2009, Alex and Becca picked up their friend, J.P. George, then 15 years old,and drove to the family's house on Allendale Drive where their dad was home alone.

"Dad was in the living room sitting in his chair. Dad told Becca to take the dogs out and he asked me where we had been."

Alex said his dad and sister started arguing, so he pulled a .38 caliber revolver out of his father's gun safe, loaded it and handed it to George.

"I was almost out of the house when I heard the shot. When I got outside, I saw Becca sitting on a flower box. I pulled myself up on a railing to see if J.P. really did it and saw my dad slumped over. We all quickly got in the car and drove off."

Alex said they paid J.P. $200 and threw the gun in a pond.

His mother originally told police she was worried, went to check on her husband and found him dead. But just a few days ago, a grand jury indicted her for soliciting her children to kill her husband.

In a hearing last month, Alex Hart told a judge he intended to plead guilty in the murder. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison, and as a special condition of his sentence, Alex Hart may have to testify against Becca, J.P. and possibly even his mother one day.

Becca Hart and J.P. George are scheduled to be in court Monday in Clarksville. A trial date could be set for them at that time.

Hart's mother is currently out of jail on bond. Channel 4 tried to contact her Friday but was unsuccessful.
