12th South experiencing increased break-ins

Posted: Updated:

After a series of break-ins in the 12th South District, some homeowners are increasing their security to keep their families safe.

"I was shocked. Nobody ever stole something. I could leave anything," said resident Clara Pope.

Pope said she remembers the days she could keep the doors unlocked at her home in the 12th South District.

She has lived here for more than five decades without a problem until this year.

"(The robber) sawed the lock off and just opened the door and took the stuff out," said Pope.

She's not the only victim in the neighborhood.

"I never wanted to be the guy who told the kids to get off their land, but I'm turning into that man real quick," said Steve, a 12th South resident who didn't want to be identified out of fear of retaliation.

He said his home has been broken into in recent months and these robbers took more than valuables.

"They're stealing a feeling of privacy from you," he said.

Some neighbors have added surveillance cameras to their homes, blockaded the fences around their yard and even tinted windows at their home. Steve says he and his wife have been going to a shooting range to protect themselves and their property.

"We all have alarm systems and guns, and one day we'll catch one of you," said Steve.

Metro police say break-ins like this come in waves. They're having some issues in the 12th South area and are increasing their visibility and adding bicycle patrols to cut down on break-ins. Neighbors hope it will help for their sake and the robbers.

"I shoot well, but my wife shoots better, and anybody who ever thinks about coming in, needs to think of that. That they might get shot," said Steve.
