NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

One person was killed during a head-on crash on North Gallatin Pike on Sunday morning.

Metro police said a Toyota Prius caught fire after a head-on collision with a Jeep Cherokee.

The Jeep's front seat passenger, Kimberly Allen, 47, from Madison, died after arriving at Vanderbilt.

The driver of the Prius, Marshall Fortson, Jr., 19, of Madison, was rescued by two citizens.

According to officers, a witness grabbed a fire extinguisher at a nearby business and attempted to douse the flames.

The witness also tried to get the driver out of the vehicle with a crowbar.

Fortson was critically injured and transported to Vanderbilt.

The driver of the Jeep, David Pollock, 44, of Madison, and a rear seat passenger, Marrie Pollock, 16, were also critically injured and transported to Vanderbilt.

The incident is under investigation, but police say it appears that the Prius was traveling north on North Gallatin Pike at 7:20 a.m. when it entered a curve, crossed the center dividing line and crashed into the southbound Jeep.

The reason the Prius crossed into the Jeep's path is under investigation. Police say there was no evidence of alcohol or drug involvement at the scene of the accident.
