Get cost-effective spa treatment from students

Posted: Updated:

With the economy in a downturn, many people have cut out extra pleasures like manicures and facials. But there's a place where you can still get your fix at a reduced rate.

The soothing feel of a facial massage or a microdermabrasion can be received at the Nashville campus of Tennessee Tech for pennies of what you might normally spend.

"They're students. They need bodies to work on, so you get different people every time you come. You cannot make an appointment with a specific student," customer Tina Koenig said.

She and her neighbor have made it a monthly ritual. For 90 minutes, 12 times a year, she said her worries of the world are checked at the door.

"Oh, it's fantastic. I mean $20 for a 90-minute treatment is unheard of," Koenig said.

What used to be a clinical classroom setting has been transformed into a mini salon. The students today might be the same people working at a salon next month.

"We feel like we're offering a great value to our customers. In other words, we're offering some of the same services they give in salons in medical spas, wellness centers and things like that," trainer Louise Fondaw said.

The school offers waxing, tweezing, Shiatsu facials and also a LED machine recently featured on Oprah.

"We tell our students, we don't train them to do facials, we train them to do skin care treatments. We treat acne, rosacea, pigmentation problems, dryness, oiliness. It's very, very inexpensive. It's affordable, and it feels as though you've gone to a spa. It's the same thing. The atmosphere is great," Fondaw said.

Nashville campus of Tennessee Tech is located at 100 White Bridge Road in west Nashville.

Call 425-5511 to book an appointment Monday through Thursday. They take clients until 5 p.m.
