Madden offered a plea deal in MTSU student's death

Posted: Updated:

Shanterrica Madden the former MTSU student who police say stabbed her roommate to death has been offered a plea deal. But it wasn't what she was expecting or hoping for.

Madden was not too pleased with the state's offer according to her attorney Joe Brandon.

"(She) cried," Madden's attorney Joe Brandon said, "It was a very sad meeting."

He met with the former MTSU student yesterday.

"I can't discuss, really, the offer," said Rutherford County Assistant District Attorney General J. Paul Newman, "but the offer is to, of course, plead guilty."

Brandon says the plea deal wasn't much to consider.

"It's hard to characterize, when an offer involves pleading as charged, as being any type of a serious offer to resolve a case," Brandon said.

The state's offer was for Madden to plead guilty as charged; guilty to first-degree murder and tampering with evidence.

The unanswered question is what will Madden get in exchange for a guilty plea?

"First-degree murder carries either life with or without the possibility of parole which is 51 years.  Tampering with evidence is a Class C felony carrying 3 to 6 years as a range 1 offender," said Brandon.

Madden is accused of stabbing her roommate, star MTSU basketball player Tina Stewart to death in their off campus apartment.

Stewart's family says Madden doesn't deserve a plea deal.

"We will not approve of that, we will not stand behind that because, I mean, she's getting a deal.  Did Tina get a deal? No," Stewart's sister Moneka Jones said, after an arraignment hearing last month.

Madden is scheduled to appear in court in a few weeks. At that time she and her attorney will let the court know whether she will accept the deal or not; or simply take her chances with a jury of her peers.

Madden's plea hearing is Aug. 23.

A trial date has been tentatively set for January 30, 2012.
