Church hosts "Caring By Sharing" clothing giveaway

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Just in time for back to school, a local church is giving away clothes and more absolutely free.

The Tusculum Church of Christ is holding its annual "Caring by Sharing" clothing giveaway event Saturday.

They'll have everything from baby clothes and school uniforms to adult dresses, suits and accessories.

"This event is wide open to the Middle Tennessee area," said event organizer July Whisler. "It's just a way for us to provide a basic need for everyone - clothing."

Everything at the giveaway is first-come, first-served but there are a few limitations.

When people first come through they'll be limited to two shopping bags worth of clothing per person, two pairs of shoes, a coat and three hanging items. Individuals will also only get about 25 minutes to shop their first time through.

"After all the people have come through for the first time, they're allowed to come back," Whisler said. "Then we will hand them as many bags as they want and they are allowed to get as much as they want. We want to be fair to everyone so we only set a limit at the beginning."

This is the 14th year for "Caring By Sharing," which always takes place on the first weekend in August.

"This is especially good for school kids. We time it the way we do because it's time for school to start again," Whisler said. "For those that don't have a school uniform code we have plenty for them to chose from, for those that do, we have a section strictly for school uniforms."

Even if you're not in need of a new wardrobe, event organizers said you're still welcome.

"We have people come to get clothes for themselves and sometimes just for people they know who need them," Whisler said.

This year, the church has added even more to the giveaway - a formalwear section.

This area features dresses for any formal occasion such as a prom, homecoming dance or wedding.

"Most of the dresses were donated by The Fairy Godmother Project. Some of them have never even been worn," Formalwear Coordinator Janee Petree said. "Formalwear is so expensive and some people just can't afford to spend that kind of money on a one-time occasion. This is a great opportunity to save a little money."

In addition to the perfect dress, visitors can also pick out matching shoes and a handbag.

The giveaway is Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Tusculum Church of Christ, 6117 Nolensville Pike, Nashville, TN 37211.
