A family in Murfreesboro is trying to cope with the murder of their brother and son.

Kevin Barrett, 45 of Burks Hollow Road in Southern Rutherford County had just finished unloading hay when he walked into his home and came face to face with two strangers.

"It's hard," said Danita Williams the sister of the murder victim.

Family members of Kevin Barrett are having a difficult time coping with what happened to him.

"They have robbed us of a great family member," Williams added. "Not only did they rob him, they robbed us, and they took my mother's baby."

Just after 7:00 yesterday family members say Barrett had just finished unloading hay for the winter on the family farm.

His girlfriend was inside the house; she told authorities Aaron Walker, 21, of Bradyville Pike in Murfreesboro and James Lamendola, 20, of Old Lascassas Hwy burst in, pointed a gun at her and then pushed her to the floor.

Channel 4 News has learned the woman was tied up, bound and beaten.

Rutherford County investigators said the two crooks demanded the woman turn over bank information.

Kevin Barrett walked in, saw what was happening and tried to make a run for it.

"He had gotten off the tractor, and was ambushed, murdered. He didn't deserve to die like this," Williams said.

Rutherford County Sheriff's officials found him shot to death in the yard.

"He was a good person, he never bothered anyone," the victim's sister said.

The men allegedly stole Barrett's and his girlfriend's vehicles and drove to Murfreesboro.

Sheriff's deputies spotted the stolen vehicles near the University Gables Apartments on South Rutherford County Blvd. across from the Wal-Mart and gave chase.

Then men jumped out. One was quickly apprehended. The other one was arrested a short time later during a traffic stop.

Family members tell us Barrett's home had been broken into several weeks ago, and again yesterday.  Rutherford County officials confirm no report was done, but they did put extra patrol on the house.

"Didn't expect nothing up in here would happen up in the hollow," said next door neighbor Donnie Green.

Green is concerned, and that's why he is now taking extra precautions.

"Well I just load my gun up. I told somebody this morning I moved it closer to me," Green added.

Kevin Barrett loved to farm, according to family members. They said he will be missed.

"The fact that when I come up here I can depend on him to help me and help mom," Danita Williams said.

Aaron Walker and James Lamendola are facing first degree murder charges, including aggravated kidnapping and robbery, in addition to burglary and theft.

Both are still in jail at the Rutherford County Detention Center on a $1 million bond.

They are scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on Sept. 14.
