NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
One person was killed and two others were wounded in a shootout between rival gang members who drove onto Albion Street at 2:45 p.m. Monday. A nearby daycare center was also evacuated after the incident.
According to Metro Police, as many as eight people who arrived in two vehicles were involved in the gunfire.
A large number of shots were fired, many from assault-type weapons, according to police.
One man, believed to be a 33-year-old convicted felon, was found dead in a yard in the 3000 block of Albion Street. An assault-type rifle with a collapsible stock was beside his body. His name is being withheld pending confirmation of identity and notification of family.
Convicted felon Finis Lewis, 33, of Lucile Street, was arrested by police before he could flee the area. Lewis received a gunshot wound to his arm and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Lewis was free on $125,000 bond in connection with a drug and firearms case that is scheduled for trial in February. A murder indictment accusing Lewis of killing a man in the J.C. Napier public housing development had to be dismissed due to a lack of witness cooperation, according to police.
Federal firearm charges are expected to be filed against Lewis on Tuesday.
The district attorney's office is filing a motion to revoke Lewis' bail.
Jermaine Baldwin, 25, of Big Oak Drive, was shot in the chest and is in stable condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He apparently ran from the street into Hadley Park during the gunfire.
Quinten Smith, 26, of North Second Street, was uninjured and captured near Baldwin in Hadley Park. An assault-type pistol was recovered in that same area, according to police.
Smith, who is a convicted felon, was also involved in the same murder case with Lewis and had the charge dismissed due to the same witness issues. Smith is also expected to be charged with federal firearms violations on Tuesday.
Several other individuals fled the scene in a black car prior to police arrival. North Precinct detectives, the police department's Gang Unit and federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are continuing in their efforts to identify them. Most of the parties in this case are known to the Gang Unit and ATF agents through previous and on-going investigations, according to authorities.
Children at the Little Hearts Day Care were moved to another location after the shooting occurred at 3003 Albion St., which is also across from Hadley Park.
