A grand jury in Chattanooga has indicted a Smyrna woman on a charge of attempted first-degree murder in what prosecutors say was an attempt to suffocate her young son.
The indictment returned Wednesday also charges 41-year-old Monica Hammers with aggravated child abuse, according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press.
Hammers was arrested after an employee of Erlanger Hospital told police Hammers put a pillow over the face of her 4-year-old son. The boy had been brought to the hospital on May 6 for court-ordered medical testing and was scheduled to have a broken arm set, according to a police report.
The boy was placed in protective custody.
Hammers will be arraigned July 15. Hamilton County Jail records don't list an attorney for her.
