Humphreys County deputies allegedly beat suspect

Posted: Updated:

A videotape of a man allegedly being beaten and Tasered by police has lead to a TBI investigation.

On Jan. 23 in Humphreys County outside of Waverly, 35-year-old Darrin Ring was allegedly handcuffed, stripped naked, kicked, hit with a baton and Tasered.

Ring suffered four broken ribs and a punctured lung. The three Humphreys County deputies say Ring assaulted them, resisted arrest and attempted to reach for one of the deputies guns.

The public defender says that story doesn't make sense if you look at the in-car video camera.

"My client complied, never resisted and was given conflicting demands, you would treat an animal better," says Jake Lockert, public defender for the 23rd Judicial District.

The district attorney has looked at the tape and asked the TBI for an independent investigation.

The Humphreys County Sheriff's Department is not commenting on the tape.

Darrin Ring has been in jail for more than five months awaiting trial. The public defender is holding a hearing to dismiss all charges.
