New report clears McWherter of Bingo scam involvement

FBI records are adding to the legacy of late Governor Ned McWherter.

According to a new report, McWherter never got caught up in the bingo scam that rocked the state in the 1980s.

During its Rocky Top investigation, the FBI found that some state officials were helping illegal gambling operations.

According to a new report, McWherter never got caught up in the bingo scam that rocked the state in the 1980s.

During its Rocky Top investigation, the FBI found that some state officials were helping illegal gambling operations.

Democratic State Representative Tommy Burnett was sent to prison following this investigation.

Secretary of State Gentry Crowell's handling of bingo regulation was also investigated, which led authorities to looking into activities by legislator Ted Ray Miller.

Although McWherter was surrounded by people involved in the scam, he was never a subject, witness or target of the FBI's investigation.

Those who knew McWherter say he always acted ethically.

The FBI looked into McWherter's background when President Bill Clinton nominated him for the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors.
