LAWRENCEBURG, Ky. (AP) - Officials say Kentucky bourbon distilleries have spent at least $150 million to expand their operations, moves aimed at quenching an increasing worldwide thirst for the state's signature liquor.

Eric Gregory, president of the Kentucky Distillers' association, says it's 1 of the industry's biggest expansions since Prohibition. Among the projects is the new Wild Turkey distillery in central Kentucky's rolling hills, which is a $50 million facility that can produce twice as much bourbon as the mothballed plant nearby.

Demand for bourbon, especially premium batches, is rapidly expanding, thanks in part to the comeback of cocktails appealing to younger adults. Officials also credit lower tariffs, robust marketing and a larger middle class in emerging markets for the spike.
