Community raising funds to help bring teacher home

LAWRENCEBURG, TN (WSMV) -

Those who know him best remember Wes Putman as the happy, adventurous young man who loves to play the guitar.

But now Wes, is more than 6,000 miles away from Middle Tennessee in a hospital bed in Seoul, South Korea.  On March 12 the 26-year-old elementary school teacher was struck by a taxi cab while crossing an eight-lane highway with friends.

"He fell to the asphalt and as best we can tell he hit head-first and sustained critical head injuries," said Melissa Brazier.

Wes' family is trying desperately to get him back home. But shortly before leaving Lawrenceburg, Wes, dropped his health insurance, with the assurance that the school in South Korea would put him on their plan.

They did, but the policy doesn't cover accidents. Now it's going to cost the young man's family more than $100,000 for a flight back home.

"The cheapest rate to fly him home on an air ambulance is $134,000. The highest is $169,000, if he flies air ambulance back to the states," said Brazier.

This Saturday, the family is holding a benefit for Wes. The "Heart to Seoul 5-k run" will be a fun day-out for families, but Wes' family is hoping folks in Middle Tennessee will come and help them, get their boy back home.

"One thing the doctors said was the best healing is going to be when his family is with him and he can have familiar people to respond to," said Brazier.

Right now Wes' mother is by his side in South Korea. Soon his family is hoping they will be able to see him as well, playing the guitar again.
