NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Work began Thursday morning on another piece of Nashville's new convention center, the Music City Center.

Ground was broken for the Omni Hotel.

When complete, the hotel will stand 21 stories and have 800 rooms.  It will be directly across the street from the Music City Center.

The company's president said the designed to best reflect music city.

"As a brand, we really try to focus on local authenticity.  And I think what we saw in Nashville was a city that was ready for our type of hotel," said Omni Hotels president Mike Deitemeyer.  "I travel.  I meet with different meeting planner groups all over the country.  As I talk about the projects, and I talk about what we have going on, the one people want to hear about is Nashville."

Omni will spend 20 percent of the $250 million construction cost with local companies.

"I know I'm biased here, but I guarantee you, we will have the most special, the most unique, the compelling convention center headquarters' hotel in all of the United States," said Nashville Mayor Karl Dean.

The luxury hotel is expected to open in 2013, the same year the Music Center will be completed.
