Hundreds of athletes from across Tennessee are in Nashville this weekend, in hopes of taking home the gold.
More than 1,200 athletes and volunteer coaches took part in an opening cermonies for the 2011 Special Olympic State Summer Games Friday night.
The festivities at Lipscomb University's Allen Arena began with a parade of athletes, followed by a formal ceremony that included the ligting of the Special Olympics Flame of Hope.
Competition begins Saturday at 9 a.m. at venues all over Nashville and includes sports of track and field, swimming, powerlifting, bocce, volleyball and tennis.
