Hoeganaes Plant To Reopen After Fatal Explosion

Posted: Updated:
GALLATIN, TN (WSMV) -

The Hoeganaes plant in Gallatin will reopen Monday after two fatal explosions, the most recent in May.

Officials told the Tennessean that the plant restarted two of its dozen blast furnaces Friday.

The decision to resume production has been met by government opposition.

Investigators with the U.S. Chemical Safety Board said last week that no work should be performed at the plant until it is redesigned and rebuilt. However, the board has no enforcement powers and cannot prevent the reopening. The state's occupational health and safety administration has that power, and has agreed, according to the paper.

Two workers were killed after an explosion May 27, and two others died after a blast in January.

Another blast in March injured one worker, who has since returned to work.
