Volunteers Spend Thousands Of Hours Cleaning 3-01-2011
The trash bags are lined up and the gloves are out. Metro's Beautification Department is getting ready for the Great American Cleanup. The event began Tuesday and runs through May 31. Last year, volunteers racked up more than 95,000 hours picking up trash on the roads and in streams and creeks, and cleaning graffiti off buildings. By the time they were finished, they had collected about 800,000 pounds of trash. "Anyone can make a difference. You can be 5 years old, you can be 50, you can be 105, and you can pick up litter and make your neighborhood a cleaner, better place," said Veronica Frazier of Metro Beautification. Metro has participated in the Great American Cleanup since 1982.
