FOX19 free Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Weather app - WSMV Channel 4

FOX19 Weather App Information page

During severe weather, it's more important than ever to have the latest version in the palm of your hand. That's why FOX19 is continuing to improve our free mobile weather app.

The FOX19 weather app features a great radar, local weather conditions, forecast, and video forecast from the FOX19 Stormtrackers.

Starting on July 1, we began offering up to the minute traffic information. All you have to do is turn on the Cincinnati Traffic layer by clicking the little in the upper right hand corner.

You can enter your zip code to get an exact forecast for where you live. You even have the option to add more zip codes if you want a forecast for another location.

This application can be found for iPhones, iPads or iPod Touches by searching for FOX19 on iTunes or you can click here.

In November, Google changed their maps API which is used in the Android mobile device by our weather app.

The update by Google from 2.0 to 3.0 made some significant changes to levels at which roadway markers are available in the satellite/hybrid view we had been using since the initial release of the apps over 2 years ago. In addition, in the satellite/hybrid view no political boundaries are available for display at all, e.g. no state or county borders.

Both of these changes are unfortunate and less of a user experience than we would like. Our developers have talked to Google but right now we have little leverage.

To help you have a better user experience, the new version of the weather apps that we released on November 21 now includes an option for you to pick the map type you want.

Currently, there are only two choices, Map or Satellite.

The "Map" look is a lightly elevation shaded green/whitebased map that does not show satellite/aerial photography basemap data at any zoom level. Appropriate road categories are

shown at different zoom levels. State lines are shown at most zoom levels.

The "Satellite" look has satellite/aerial photography basemap data at all zoom levels. Road labels are shown at intermediate zoom levels, but road lines are only shown at very tight zoom levels, somewhere <1 mile. There are no state or county lines.

As a user, you have the option to select which map look you prefer, that setting is saved when you exit the app. This control can be found in the "Settings" section of your app under the "Other" tab.

The choice between base map looks does not affect any other capabilities in the map component of the app, all weather data and overlays is available with both versions.
