INSIDE SPORTS ONLINE: The 4 Best Holidays For Sports

Which holidays make the best days to kick back, relax and watch sports?

1.) New Year's Day: For my money, New Year's Day is the greatest holiday in sports. There is nothing better than walking from the bed to the recliner, sitting down to watch bowl games for 13 hours, only getting up to go to the fridge and the bathroom. Since the inception of the BCS, the number of New Year's Day bowl games has dwindled. In the good ‘ole days, all the games used to be packed into one day, now they’re spread out over a week. This year there are only five bowl games. The NCAA can make it up to me by making a resolution for a playoff.

Survey: What's The Best Holiday For Sports?

In case you're like me and five games is not enough, the NBA and NHL also have games slated for Jan. 1. When the stars truly align and Jan. 1 falls on a Sunday , the NFL comes to the party.

2.) Thanksgiving: When you think about Thanksgiving, you either think about turkey or football. I think about both because I’m from Detroit were the turkeys play football. Tradition has seen the Lions and Cowboys play on Thanksgiving Day for years. There is also always a college football game played on turkey day. This year No. 3 Texas takes on in-state rival Texas A&M.

Recently, the NFL network has added a third NFL game that airs after the Cowboys play. This year, the New York Giants travel to Denver to take on the Broncos. I bet many people won’t be watching this game, not because it’s on NFL network, but because they’ll probably be passed out by then .

3.) April Fool's Day: April 1 has played host to important sporting events; both the men’s and woman’s college basketball national championship games , opening day of baseball, playoff races in the NBA and NHL, as well as a golf tournaments. In 1985, 20 days before I was born, eight seed Villanova took down No.1 Georgetown in one of the greatest upsets in national championship history.

In fact, every time a national championship game has been played on April 1, the underdog has won ... April Fool's.

4.) Christmas: Christmas is all about giving. Sports Santa gives us an NFL game and five NBA games. In this bad economy we won’t be getting as many presents as we used too. College football will not play a bowl game this year on Christmas Day.

I almost had to drop Christmas off the list, but since Nashville was good this year, Santa put a Titans game in our stocking. Tennessee will take on San Diego Christmas night at LP Field. If we are really good Santa will give us win number nine.

Honorable Mentions:

Chanukah: A holiday that lasts eight nights features a lot of sporting events: college football championships, NFL, NBA, NHL, men's and women's college basketball.

Labor Day: The beginning of the college football season.

July 4th: Wimbledon and the heat of summer baseball.
