Falling Star: Tippett Out As Coach In Dallas

POSTED: 6:47 pm CDT June 10, 2009

(Sports Network) - The Dallas Stars have reportedly fired head coach Dave Tippett following a disappointing season where the club failed to secure a playoff berth for the first time since 2002.

TSN Canada is definitively reporting the firing, which becomes the second significant move made by the Stars in a little over a week following the appointment on May 31 of Joe Nieuwendyk to the general manager's position. The two-man team of Brett Hull and Les Jackson, who shared GM duties since their hiring in November of 2007, were reassigned within the organization.

Tippett spent six years guiding the Stars after being named the 19th coach in franchise history in May of 2002. He led the club to two Pacific Division titles (2002-03 and 2005-06) and five consecutive playoff appearances including a trip to the Western Conference Finals just last season before losing to Detroit in six games.

The team had been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs each of the three years preceding the team's run to West finals but Tippett was rewarded with a contract extension through the 2010-11 season. The club then tripped to a 36-35-11 mark this past year, good for 12th in the West.

The franchise is looking to recover from several missteps taken last season. Following its ouster by eventual Cup champion Detroit, Dallas' biggest offseason move was the addition of renowned pest Sean Avery.

Avery was signed last off-season on Hull's suggestion to a five-year contract. After several on-ice incidents early in the season, Avery was eventually released by the club after an off-ice incident in December regarding derogatory comments about an ex-girlfriend and Flames defenseman Dion Phaneuf.

Tippett, 47, finishes with a record of 271-162-59 with the Stars, his first NHL head coaching assignment. He spent three years as an assistant with the Los Angeles Kings prior to his hiring in Dallas and played 11 years in the NHL with Hartford, Washington, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. He recorded 93 goals and 169 assists for 262 points in 721 NHL games.
