A troubled piece of Nashville history could be out of trouble for a while.

The Music City Motorplex, which was for years known as the Fairgrounds Speedway, will be around a little longer than some people expected or hoped.

Area resident Adrian Day loves a leisurely evening in front of his TV. During the winter months, he gets to relax, but in the spring, he said his TV’s noise is no match for the Motorplex.

“At full volume, we still hear the races over the television set,” he said.

Day lives up the hill from the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. He and some his neighbors have posted signs against the Motorplex that say “no racetrack.”

The Motorplex's contract was set to run out at the end of 2008, and neighbors hoped that would heal their headaches and that the Tennessee Fair Board wouldn't renew it. But the Motorplex released a statement that said the Fair Board has extended its lease until the end of 2009.

The extension means neighbors will now have to endure at least two more race seasons.

“It's a real blow, and from where I sit it's out of step with where the community is going,” Day said.

Fans that fill the seats during race season are probably excited about the news, but the fair board warned to not wave the checkered flag just yet.

“Next Tuesday morning, there (will) be a special meeting to finalize and to hear what the legal department and purchasing department says when they look at the contract,” said fairgrounds representative Bill Whitson.

The Fair Board has hired a consultant to come up with ideas about how to better use the entire Tennessee State Fairgrounds, and the consultant will present ideas sometime in August.

The Fair Board said it was the consultant who recommended it extend its contract with the Music City Motorplex.
