A racial slur and a live microphone have resulted in a suspension for a Murfreesboro officer.

Capt. Carl Watkins was handed a three-day suspension for using the "N" word in a conversation.

Watkins, who is black, was on duty when the incident happened in February.

The slur was broadcast over his police radio.

During the subsequent investigation, Watkins explained that he was talking to friends and it was "a term of endearment."

In addition to the suspension, Watkins must attend cultural diversity training.
